What is the endocannabinoid system?

The endocannabinoid system - named for the cannabis plant that led to its discovery in 1992 - is an essential bodily system involved in establishing and maintaining our health.

Cannabinoid Receptors

Throughout your body, there are numerous cannabinoid receptors. These play a part in our bodies' day-to-day functions, including our sense of taste, ability to feel pain, memory and mood. Together, these receptors constitute a system known as the endocannabinoid system.

Cannabinoid Ingredients

Before you start worrying you're a plant, cannabinoid receptors in humans are known as "Endocannabinoids", and the receptors and compounds found within the cannabis plant are known as "Phytocannabinoids." Among these are the well-known CBD and THC, along with hundreds of others which scientists have found (and continue to find) naturally occurring within different cannabis strains.

Contrary to popular belief, most cannabinoids will not get you high. Current research suggests that THC (along with a few others) are the only compounds linked to the “cannabis high”.
