Does CBD oil get you high? We explore the facts - and the myths

Cannabidiol - or CBD oil - is derived from the cannabis or marijuana plant that provides a range of therapeutic relief benefits including alleviating pain, assisting with sleep and helping to treat the symptoms of mental health ailments like anxiety and depression.

The big question we always receive at V&YOU is "Will CBD oil get you high?" Naturally, the lines are often blurred on the subject, so we thought it would be best to cover all bases when it comes to consuming this type of product.

The straight answer to that question is no, CBD will not get you high; not in any volume that you consume. That is because cannabidiol is just one of hundreds of chemical compounds found in the cannabis or marijuana plant and it is not one that contains the psychoactive agent Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (the part that can get you high).

THC is not at all present in CBD oil so you can be assured you can safely take this product without fear of any negative mind-altering impacts.

In fact, it is completely illegalto sell THC in any form in the UK

As part of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 - which has been amended several times in recent years - cannabidiol is not regarded as a controlled substance in the UK and you are free to buy, sell and use this product at your leisure.

The caveat on this is that each bottle must contain less than 0.05 per cent THC to be legal in the UK. We understand you may have questions around that. Afterall, if there is a slight or trace amount of THC in the CBD oil, isn't there a chance I could still get high? Well, no, there isn't.

Essentially, you are going to need between 2.5mg and 15mg of THC to experience the slightest amount of euphoria. To achieve that from CBD oil that has 0.05 per cent THC, you would need to consume around two litres in one sitting. Considering the average daily dose of CBD oil (depending on concentration) is between 1-4 drops that are 0.05 millilitres (mL) each, that’s probably not going to happen.

So is CBD oil 100 per cent safe to use?

This is a difficult question to answer and the answer is yes - as long as you take the right precautions (like anything you consume). Too much of a good thing is no longer a good thing so you should stick to the recommended doses to reap the benefits of CBD oil.

Excess consumption can also lead to side effects like nausea, fatigue and irritability, so if you are feeling any of these symptoms, try reducing the dose.

Again, like anything, taking CBD oil in conjunction with prescription medications can cause problems if there is an adverse reaction between the two. You should alwaysspeak to your GP if you are taking medications and plan on taking CBD oil as well.

In general, though, CBD is 100 per cent natural and organic, will not deliver a high and is totally safe to use on a daily basis. This has been backed up by World Health Organisation research as well which found that CBD Oil is “safe and well-tolerated in humans and is not associated with any public health effects.”

The World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) also removed CBD oil from its list of banned substances back in 2017 which means athletes are free to use it for their own wellbeing, to assist with sleep, stress management and a range of other, non-performance-enhancing reasons.

Is CBD oil addictive?

No. And that is coming straight from the World Health Organisation as well, with WHO conducting a

comprehensive review on CBD Oil and determining that there is no potential for addiction.

"In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential," the review concluded.

Not only is CBD oil not addictive, but it is also unlikely to be habit-forming either. Habit-forming addictions like gambling or even drinking coffee are triggered by rushes of dopamine that are not present when you take CBD oil.

In fact, CBD oil can be used as a way to quit using THC products because it blocks the CB1 receptor on dopamine neurons in the brain which is how THC activates its sense of reward.
